Consequences of Election

We the People: Israel and the Catholicity of Jesus,
Tommy Givens, Fortress, 2014, page 280

That's all very well, but what does it mean in practice? It sounds good, but what are wesupposed to do with it? Givens' answer is quite radical.

The people is freed from the presumption that its life depends on its own striving or policing and so it can be a community of both discipline and unconditional love. In fact, this discipline and this love are not competitive. The unconditional love of G-d that refuses to settle for anything other than a community of corresponding, non-violent love lies at the heart of the politics of election. It is the discipline of peoplehood.
