Knitter's Models I

Seeing Judaism Anew: Christianity's Sacred Obligation,
Ed. Mary C. Boys, Rowman and Littlefield, 2002
Chapter Jesus as the Universal Saviour, "127-137", page 129-130

Peter Phan then goes on to consider the four models of contemporary theology proposed by Paul F. Knitter: replacement, fulfillment, mutuality and acceptance.

The first model - replacement - affirms that Christianity is the only one true religion and that it will replace, totally or partially, all other religions that are considered as humanity's sinful attempts at self-salvation.

Well, that's one way to win friends and influence people. It certainly represents both a historic and the current hard-line evangelical or reform church position, but how faithful is it to Scripture and the heart of G-d? It takes literally the New Testament claims that Jesus is the unique, universal and absolute saviour as traditionally confessed by the Christian faith.
