Attribute Three: Deal with Ambiguity
The Coding Manual for Qualitative Researchers, 2nd Edition,
Johnny Saldana, Sage, 2013, page 36
Saldana's third attribute is the ability to deal with ambiguity. Explainign that coding is not a precise science with specific algorithms and non-ambiguous answers, he points out that qualitative reseachers may have to spend a long time puzzling over some material in order to work out what it really means, how it fits into the general scheme. He does offer the encouragement that:
Rich ideas need time to formulate, so have trust and faith in yourself that these may emerge in due time.
I shall be praying about it as well!
