The Commentator's Bible: the JPS Miqra'ot Gedolot -
Michael Carasik (editor and translator)
Jewish Publication Society
The third published but fourth volume in the still currently
being published set of newly edited and translated commentaries
in the format of the Miqra'ot Gedolot. The basic text on each
page contains a pointed Torah text and the English translation
from the original JPS translation (1917) and the New JPS
translation (1985). Surrounding this are newly edited and
translated commentaries from major commentators: Rashi, Rashbam,
Ibn Ezra, Nachmanides. Most pages contain questions from
Abarbanel and other selected comments drawn from a wide range
of sources (Sforno, Gersonides, Saadia Ga'on, etc.). Where
appropriate, explanations of the comments are also provided.
This is a large format book, making it easy to read and use.
Only one volume remains in preparation and is eagerly awaited.
Though somewhat pricey, these volumes are well presented, easy
to use and bring valuable commentaries into wider circulation.
